Why Terror Supporters and Berlin’s Underworld Felt at Home at the Left’s Victory Party
THE DOOR THAT OPENED BY ITSELF
They always say nobody invited them. That is the old ritual: a few bad apples, a few distant acquaintances, a misunderstanding, a door that supposedly opened by itself. Fine. But a door does not issue political signals. The room behind it does.
Berlin’s Left had reason to celebrate after the election. It had also reason to learn, once again, that victory parties are not sealed chambers. They are magnets. They pull in people who smell opportunity faster than ideology, and who recognize atmosphere before they recognize a slogan. Among those whose presence drew the loudest criticism were Issa Remmo, from the Berlin clan milieu, and Ibrahim Ibrahim, an activist long associated in public reporting with pro-Palestinian and PFLP-linked activism. Party figures insisted Remmo was not invited and was sent away. That may be true. It is also not the point.
WHEN A ROOM FEELS FAMILIAR
The point is simpler and uglier. People do not drift into such settings only because a room is open. They appear because the room already feels like theirs, or at least like a place where nobody will ask the right questions too early. That is where political culture shows its real face: not in the press release after the embarrassment, but in the ease with which the wrong people assume they belong.
SOMETIMES THE APPARATUS ONLY CHANGES ITS TIE
The old East German instinct still applies here: a slogan can change, a logo can be redesigned, and the apparatus will swear it has become something cleaner. Sometimes it has. Sometimes it has only changed its tie. Anyone who has lived through real party discipline knows the difference. The lesson is not that every guest is an accomplice. The lesson is that every milieu leaves a scent. And some rooms wear that scent like cologne.
So no, the scandal is not mainly who slipped past the door. The scandal is why they stood there so comfortably in the first place.
A doorman does not send political signals. The milieu behind the door usually does.
