“Germany has become unaffordable. We’re leaving.”
A sentence like a sledgehammer. Loud enough for a headline, slick enough for the next talk show — and still nowhere near a story.
Because who is “we”? What exactly became unaffordable? When did the math start to go sideways? Which numbers support the claim — and who benefits from it traveling the world as unexamined as possible?
THE SIGNAL
The RESEARCH UNIT does not begin with a finished opinion. It begins with the interference: a sentence, a document, a memory, a number, or a claim that sounds too polished to already be true.
The signal is taken apart. Assertion and evidence are separated from one another. Names, dates, and interests are laid on the table. What is certain? What is interpretation? What is missing? And which question was left unasked so skillfully that almost no one notices its absence?
THE TRAIL
At ROADSTONES, research does not mean decorating a desired punchline with convenient findings. The trail may confirm the original idea. It may change it. And it may destroy it completely.
Sources are not sorted by volume, but by reliability. A quote is not proof just because it has been repeated often. A number does not become truer because it appears in a graphic. An official letter does not automatically answer the question a person asked. And a personal memory does not lose its value just because it appears in no statistic.
CONTEXT IS NOT DECORATION
You can quote every sentence correctly and still tell a false story. All it takes is leaving out what came before, what came after, or the decisive context.
That is why the RESEARCH UNIT does not only ask whether something was said. It asks under what conditions it was said, what the source could have known, which opposing voices are missing, and whether a convenient general truth is being built from a single case.
A claim is material. Only scrutiny makes it publishable.
WHAT REMAINS
In the end, the story does not have to be bigger than it was at the beginning. Often it gets smaller — but more precise. Maybe nobody is leaving “because of Germany.” Maybe it’s about a single decision, a personal calculation, or a neatly staged performance. Maybe the first sentence was even right, just for completely different reasons.
That is exactly where editing begins: not with the triumph of one’s own hunch, but with what still stands after the checking is done.

You bring the signal. The RESEARCH UNIT follows the trail, sorts the context, checks sources, and marks the gaps. What then goes to the EDITORIAL DESK is not a more polished claim.
It is the credible beginning of a story.
